Mutual Fire Insurance Association of New England was founded in June 1879 when the Secretary of the Cambridge Mutual Fire Insurance requested a meeting with other Massachusetts mutuals to form an organization to discuss common issues. The resulting body of fifteen companies was first known as the Massachusetts Mutual Fire Insurance Union. Probably the reason for this first meeting was to achieve some uniformity in rating and rules of operation. Later, companies from other New England states were admitted with the present membership at nineteen. All are property and casualty companies that operate on the agency plan. The oldest member company is the Providence Mutual (1800) with the average age being 150 years. The original Massachusetts Mutual Fire Insurance Union, after several name changes, became the Mutual Fire Insurance Association of New England, and was eventually incorporated in 1966. |
